Most primary teachers are confident in the classroom. Music is the exception. It’s the subject that comes up most often when headteachers talk about PPA cover anxiety — because a non-specialist in a music lesson rarely delivers a real lesson. They manage the room. Children watch a video, complete a worksheet, or sit through something that doesn’t resemble what the National Curriculum asks for.
The National Plan for Music Education (2022, operational from September 2024) is explicit: music provision should be delivered by a music specialist wherever possible.
